The temperature is starting to rise across Arizona which means those dreaded 110 plus degree days are just around the corner. With the hottest part of the year coming up, now is the time to prepare your roof so you won’t have any issues with the heat or monsoon storms. Having worked as a residential roofing contractor in the Valley for over three decades here are a few tips you can use to make sure your roof is ready for the summer ahead.

DEEPER DIVE3 summer bugs to be on the lookout for in Arizona

Perform a visual inspection

The changing temperatures of winter to spring can cause roof materials like shingles and tiles to loosen exposing the underlayment of your roof. Loose shingles and tiles leave your home exposed to water damage which may lead to leaks, and mold growth. These issues can be difficult to deal with if left for long periods of time. It is important to address any missing material as soon as possible to avoid high repair costs and irreversible damage. It is best to inspect your roof from the ground for safety reasons. Stand back away from your home so you can see your entire roof. Use binoculars so you can see the roof up close. When inspecting your roof look for loose or cracked shingles and water streaks. Be sure to check the areas beneath any overhangs for debris as well. If you notice any damage contact a roofing professional immediately so the compromised areas don’t get worse.

Clean your gutters

With monsoon storms pouring down lots of rain during the summer it is important that your gutters remain clear, so water doesn’t pool on the roof. Regularly inspect your gutter system to catch any issues before they turn into large problems. Clear any debris such as leaves, twigs, and branches from the gutter to ensure water flow is not impeded during monsoon storms. You may want to invest in gutter guards which protect your gutters from being clogged with debris. Keeping your gutters clear so the water flows off the roof will help keep your shingles, tile and underlayment protected from water damage.

Trim trees around the house

Overhanging branches are a potential hazard for any home. During the monsoon season high winds rip through the Valley making branches fall on your roof causing major damage. If you have large overhanging branches, you must have them removed by a professional before the monsoon season starts.

Inspect all openings

Many of the areas around openings in the roof deteriorate over time. Flashing is the most common material that needs replacing. Flashing is a metal strip that fits around openings to the roof like chimneys, skylights, and vents. These areas are often prone to storm damage, so it is important that you inspect or have a professional inspect these areas before they become a serious problem.

Get a professional inspection

Having a professional roofing contractor inspect your roof is the best way to find out the health of your roof. With the roof being one of the largest expenses for any home you must take care of it. Now is a great time to hire a professional to come look at your roof because as monsoon season and the summer comes roofers will be busy with roof repairs. I suggest you have your roof inspected twice a year by a professional to make sure it is in good shape and ready for any storms and the high temperatures.

Protecting your home is vital for you and your family’s safety. Following these tips will keep your roof in good shape for years to come. As always, when it comes to roof repairs you should always contact a professional.
